It's Our Top Priority.... Professionally Getting Your Load To It's Destination Safely, In A Timely Manner, and "Without Damage." At Oversize Services, LLC we're "Leading The Way."
Most of our fleet vehicles are minivans such as unit #6325 above, a Toyota Sienna. They get better fuel mileage than do the SUVs in our fleet, and their fuel injected V6 engines are still quick enough when needing to get out of your way, such as after having stopped traffic so you can center-up to cross a narrow bridge.
Should your only concern be getting to your destination as quickly as possible, anybody in this industry can assist you with that. But when your load needs to get there not only efficiently, but also carefully, and "without incident or damage," you need someone with the knowlwdge and experience that ensures they know what they're doing. Being good at the job is not enough, because a really good escort has got to also possess the necessary experience and driving skills that due to said experience, they as a pilot car operator will understand exactly what it is that you as an over-dimentional load driver require and/or expect from the escorts that you hire. What you need is a pilot car operator that's a fellow trucker, that has transported loads similar to that which you are currently carrying, therefore knowing how to serve you without having to be lead by the hand with every task.
#3037 at Pocatello, Idaho waiting for the words, "Let's roll!"
We've been working with this builder and their driver for five years. When only quality, dependable service will do, our repeat customers request us because we have built a reputation for delivering without damage, and on-time. In short, we provide safe and dependable service. What's better than being insured for $2 million? Well, never needing to file an insurance claim is definitely much better!
As an escort, being good at this job requires more than an understanding of what is acceptable in the eyes of the Dept of Transportation. To be better than the average escort, it's necessary to know how to think beyond what the certification classes have taught. For example: There's more to running High Pole than setting the pole height 6" above the maximum height of the load. It also requires that the Pole Car Operator understand where the highest point on the load is; and more specifically, where in (or outside of) the lane that point will be when traveling on the roadways of your designated route. For certain loads, keeping the High Pole centered in the travel lane during transit is not always what is needed. Sometimes it's necessary for the escort to run with the high pole outside the fog line and/or the mustard. It's extremely important that the pole car operator know where to position themself to clear overhead objects on the same portion of the roadway where the tallest part of the load will travel.
We specialize in High Pole service, but while running pole, we keep a lookout for hazards and obstructions at ground level as well. All the good it does to make certain that you'll clear an overhead lighted cross arm or truss, if you won't be able to clear the steep grade that crowns at the intersection or railroad crossing under that overhead obstruction.
The owner at Oversize Services, LLC, my trucking career began as a Commercial Driver with a Class "C" Chauffeur's License in 1983, and then from 1989 to 2019, a CDL Class "A" driver, and as a pilot car operator from 2019 to present. I'm still currently a Class "A" CDL holder, and as such, keep my D.O.T. Medical Card current. Though now the owner of a growing pilot car company, I've worked in the transportation industry (most often as a truck driver) going on more than 40 years, delivering both legal dimension and over-dimensional loads safely. Getting you there is important; but getting you there without damage is always what we strive for.
Same load, and same camera used by #2068 as with the next image, but not the same image quality.
What can be more aggrivating than having an escort that is constantly in your way? Unlike some, we know our place. On flat ground, we stop traffic far enough ahead to give you plenty of wiggle room as you complete your turn. If turning onto a road that climbs, when necessary, we get to the top of the grade to stop traffic for your turn. Also, note the position of our pilot car, #2068.... on the mustard, but never crossing over it.
My experience includes working as an OS/OD pilot car operator and High Pole escort, as well as Chase and Third Car since 2019, escorting loads up to 20' wide, 19' high, and lengths up to 400' long - weighing as much as 550,000 lbs on equipment up to 19 axle configurations. With loads being manufactured larger and heavier with each passing year, nobody can honestly say that they've done it all. But in the last 12 years of my 34 year trucking career, and five-plus years as a Pilot Car Operator, I've either carried or escorted plenty of OS/OD loads, and can proudly boast that these loads were each delivered free of damages.
Sometimes inclement weather forces you off the road to wait the storm out, as seen here with unit #2068. Unlike many in the pilot car industry, we won't abandon you. Our vans are set up as a campervan, and as such, we have the ability to stay put, so if you were to need a ride to grab some groceries, do laundry, etc, we're right there with you. We'll take you where you need to go, and do so (within reason) at no charge. The exception to this is excessive miles, and our driver's time. If you intend to take this extra courtesy for granted, please at least offer to make it worth the driver's time. If he/she refuse a tip, then perhaps offer to buy them lunch. Shuttling a driver more than 50 miles round trip will require that those miles be noted and included on your invoice.
Never could I have been as successful as I was in trucking were it not for having been fortunate enough to have good escorts. Though I did acknowledge back then that the escorts played an important role in the move, it wasn't until becoming an escort myself that I began to understand just how much easier my job as a trucker was due to having escorts that were actually good at performing the task at hand. I'm very picky who I choose to hire. Those that I've deemed worthy are given aditional training to make certain that they too are aware of your needs as an oversized load driver. Our focus is on service. By providing the best possible service to our customers, we get them to their destination both professionally, and safely. It's this dedication that we believe is the reason we keep getting repeat business.
There are occasions when the State's permitted route becomes anything but pavement. Such roads (usually a mixture of gravel and dirt) are often narrow and very bumpy. The biggest issue with such roads are often steep grades, sharp curves, and trees. We can do little to make your truck pull better up a hill covered in wet gravel. But we can make sure nothing comes down the mountain at you, allowing you to find the best path to climb, and then advise you of the sharp bend at the bottom, as seen in these images with unit #3389.
Many oversized loads require that the product arrive without gouges, scratches, or scuffs. As such, calling something like "Scrubbers on the Right as you come out of the righthand curve" is a common radio call with our crew. It's surprising how many drivers need it explained to them what "scrubbers" are. Apparently, letting the driver know that there are stiff branches or tree limbs on the right that may damage the sides of the product being carried isn't an industry standard with many escorts. Well it is with Oversize Services!
As seen in the above images with unit #3389, trees make for a beautiful scenic drive, regardless of the season. However, in the oversize transportation industry, trees are seldom our friend.
I've found that my career carrying oversized loads on step deck, stretch flat, and stretch double-drop trailers has been more than valuable in escorting oversize loads through many of the same situations that I've more than once successfully navigated pulling similar loads in my days as a CDL truck driver. When hiring pilot car operators, I spend extra time with each of them, teaching them to recognize what the truck driver's needs and expectations are; and to not only know what to do, but to also understand why. Without knowing why, folks will seldom remember or prioritize what they've learned. If we in the oversize load transportation industry don't teach escorts what our needs are, then who will? We never assume that other escorts that we work with know everything that they should, even if they've been certified for years. Some people just won't invest in themselves anything more than what's required of them by law; and some others not even that much. There's too much at stake to let an uneducated, under-educated, or lazy escort cause you to be involved in an avoidable mishap.
#3037 n/b on I-15 holding back Lane 1 traffic until told to let them pass after clearing all the "S" curves. This isn't difficult, yet several escorts that I've worked with make it so. It's not rocket science; whichever lane the Steerman takes, the 3rd Car takes the other.
Sometimes we'll have a driver pick us up "on the fly," and when possible, we flag up and get ready to roll a couple of exits sooner so we're able to get a righteous photograph as the driver we're meeting passes by. When doing this [ONE], we make sure to let him or her know what our intentions are when we first check in with them, and [TWO], though it may be our escort's image, it's the driver's owned or assigned vehicle, and someone else's load that he or she is responsible for, so we make certain to send that driver a copy of the photo.

It's my experience as an equipment hauler that drivers most appreciate, as many escorts have no clue what drivers need from pilot car operators, both before and during transit. When hiring escorts (even those with seasoned experience), I pass what knowledge I've gained through the years onto them to better assist the drivers that we serve when navigating potential obstacles. At Oversize Services, LLC, we understand what drivers and carriers require of us.... and we deliver!

Having either hauled or escorted permit loads in all 48 of the Continental United States, and having a good understanding of the permits in each of these States, our company is able to not only help you get to your destination without damage, but will also make sure you're aware of curfews and restrictions to keep you free from permit violations, which would end up costing you both time and money were the D.O.T. to take your permit and fine you, requiring that a new permit be ordered to replace it. Any driver that this has ever happened to knows just how aggrivating it can be. It's not our place to enforce permit restrictions, but merely to make certain that we've brought those restrictions to your attention. That being said, we aren't going to grossly ignore such permit curfews and restrictions either.
Sure, we could just hire anybody that wants a position in our company. But we believe in giving you a good value for your dollar. That's why we hire only the best experienced escorts, and from there work with them to make them even better. Imagine taking this load around a 90 degree righthand turn, and as you round the radius, all you hear (if anything) is "Looking good," then suddenly "STOP! STOP! STOP!" Here at Oversize Services, LLC, our employees know that the words "looking good" are grounds for their dismissal. Here, you're "6 feet off the curb, 8 feet off the grassline, 4 feet from the gravel, now down to 3 feet from the curb, clearing the sign 5 feet off, etc," but never, ever "Looking good." ABSOLUTELY NEVER!!!!
You need escorts that know what they're doing, regardless if on the road or off. At Oversize Services, we always check fuel canopies and overhead signs at scales. We also check the slope both on and off these scales. And we know to hold back oncoming traffic in the truck stop parking area to give you room to complete your turn from the aisle that you're turning from. And we do so withouot being told, because we know what it takes to navigete such areas.
It seems that lately there have been way too many tall loads hitting overpasses and/or other overhead obstacles. At Oversize Services, LLC, it's our belief that all incidents involving the load making contact with an overhead obstruction are 100% preventable. These situations are oftentimes caused by one or more individuals becoming complacent, either not verifying the actual load height, not having verified the height of the escort's high pole, or having done neither. We ask that you (the professional driver) measure the load and high pole alongside our Pilot Car Operators. If you don't have a "high stick," no worries, as each of our escorts most certainly do. Our employees are human, and though not prone to errors and/or mistakes, that doesn't mean such isn't possible. By taking a few minutes to do a pre-trip measurement with your escort, you are eliminating any possibility of a "worst case scenario" happening during transit. And as such, you are making certain that you're the last person on planet earth that will ever be sued for damages to a load, overpass, etc due to striking an overhead structure. Regardless if you hire escorts from us, or aquire them elsewhere, no matter how much an escort seems to know what he or she are doing, always verify their pole setting, as well as the condition that the pole is in, and the proper placement of secondary locking clamps.
If installed properly, the only function that the secondary clamps on a high pole serve (as well as the factory attached clamps) is to keep each tube section from sliding downward into the larger bore tubing section directly below it. You'd be surprised at how many escorts there are that have no idea how (or for that matter why) to use secondary clamps when running as a pole car. This isn't something to take lightly.
Always check your front car's pole settings.
Check for proper pole measurment and placement of clamps.
There is too much at stake here to let just anybody run in the high pole position. It may seem like a nuisance at times, but a little aggrivation is much more preferable than what the potential out come might be by assuming that the pole car escort knew what he or she was doing when they set up their high pole. Even though any escort that we send to you does in fact know what they're doing, we request that you, their driver still take a moment to verify their pole height and setup. We do not get offended at this. We instead accept that the driver isn't one to take chances.
"IF YOU'RE A HOT-TEMPERED, OVERLY IMPATIENT, AGGRESSIVE, OR RECKLESS DRIVER, PLEASE CALL SOMEBODY ELSE TO SERVE YOU!" We have no issue in regard to escorting drivers that wish to keep up with the flow of traffic (within reason) when pulling large but lightweight loads. However, tailgating and other unsafe practices will not be tolerated! Drivers that operate in an unsafe manner or completely disregard permit restrictions and curfews are asked to seek service elsewhere. If safe driving isn't a priority of yours, then we aren't the company that you want working with you. That being said, we are pleased to serve professional, safe, and compliant drivers. Reckless drivers, however, will have to either replace us, or run without escorts, as our escorts are taught to advise an unsafe driver that we are pulling off the load, to then lead the load to the nearest ramp or safe parking area, and to await there for further instructions from our office after we've made contact with the tucking company that has hired us; and to follow this protocol "regardless if the driver follows them off the highway or not!" So please allow me to repeat myself.... "IF YOU'RE A HOT-TEMPERED, OVERLY IMPATIENT, AGGRESSIVE, OR RECKLESS DRIVER, PLEASE CALL SOMEBODY ELSE TO SERVE YOU!"

#3389, Standing at the ready.
How might we serve you today?
If getting your load delivered safely, on-time, and damage-free is important to you, then we're the company that you can depend on to help make that happen. Our name is who we are, as well as what we provide.... "SERVICE," while always making safety our utmost goal.
When you're in need of a service provider that understands what professional drivers want and/or expect from a pilot service, call us. We're dependable, and we know what you require from the escorts that you hire to serve you. We are Oversize Services, LLC, and we deliver results, not excuses. This is why regardless if out front running High Pole, or when running in the Chase or 3rd Car positions, we say that we're "Leading The Way!"
We lead by example, taking safety and quality service to a higher level. If you're satasfied with mediocre service from others, then most anybody in this industry will gladly give you that. But when you demand better, wanting service that is a reflection of excellence, give us a call. We are Oversize Services, LLC. Let us show you why we proudly earn our motto, "Leading The Way!"
As seen in these images with unit #3037, whether backing into a parking spot at the end of the day, or navigating the ramps when boarding and disembarking a ferry, with handheld radio in hand, we get out of our vehicle to walk with the load to keep a close eye on your ground clearance, as well as clearances overhead and alongside. We lead the way with a level of excellence that you'll most certainly notice. Average service is for folks that only use escorts because their permits require them to, who would otherwise do without a pilot car regardless of the size of their load. If you're needing something better than mere average service, call us instead.
Where the minimum insurance coverage required is $1 million, we carry double that amount. Some may ask why we'd carry $2 million dollars of insurance coverage, when we are certain that we'll likely never need it? Because accidents, no matter how unlikely, can happen to anybody. And when in the process of filing an insurance claim, that's the wrong time to find that the insurance that you thought was sufficient, isn't. We hire only experienced pilot car escorts with a verifiable minimum of 1 year as a seasoned pilot car operator. But we don't stop there. Applicants are required to show that they've completed and passed a pilot escort certification course prior to the beginning date of that 1 year or more of previous experience. Experience as an uncertified escort isn't valid with us. Then within 80 days after their probationary period begins with Oversize Services, LLC, potential new hires must either be certified in Florida (or possess a valid Class "A" CDL), and also within that same 80 days show us that they hold a valid certification for New York State. We cover the entire 48 Continental United States of America, and we ensure that our escorts are the very best in every State of the Continental U.S. After gaining employment, potential permanent employees then go through extensive training to meet our company standards. This training includes pilot car basics, use of radio communications, and a refresher course in all positions except Steerman. As we offer exceptional service in the High Pole position, we put a good amount of focus on High Pole refresher training. Due to the potential of a mishap with two persons in control of opposite ends of the same load, we do not provide services in the Steerman position. If you're tired of escorts that are clueless at the services which you would hire them for, next time call us; you'll be glad you did. How might we serve you today? We're Oversize Services, LLC, and we're "Leading The Way!"
